Abstract expressionism and surrealism was influenced by the second world war. The Americans at that time used art to express emotions, conditions, and lifestyle of their community. Many Americans were facing the harsh realities of World War II and this downturn determined permanent changes in their lives. It affected their household consumption, resources, and their income. However, during this time New York School became the number one place for contemporary art. They changed the art world completely by replacing Paris as one of the top world-class modern art movement. Several artists moved to New York to capitalize on the growing era of contemporary art. Thus, surrealism depicts the depth of the unconscious mind and dreams of the environmental conditions of the people at that time. Most of the artists were able to convey the people’s inner and outer realm of the subconscious mind in their painting. This method was a way to provoke conversation among the people to deal with reality of things within their society. Nevertheless, surrealism symbolize the deepest thoughts of the epic conditions of the environmental conditions of the people during the war. It was a mural of what the people were experiencing during and after the World War II transforming dreams and into nightmare imagery of the subconscious mind on canvas. A few of the styles that the artist used in their surrealism painting were illumination, chiaroscuro, and sfumato conveying a dream like feel to the painting by using the contrast of light and dark and displaying a smokey effect on each painting.

Moreover, surrealism was a naturalistic way that the artist could express and document the monumental evolution of the subconscious realm. The focal point of the art movement was vastly concentrated on the portrayal of man and their environment and the conditions that concise with which the subconscious mind express itself and how it operates. Likewise, abstract expressionism emerged in New York and artist were able to showcase their paintings that focused on the conditions of their environments.  Their painting strike an emotional chord with their audience because of what was going on during that time. With that said, early abstract expressionism and surrealism argument was based on majestic and religion of the different artist during that time. Abstract expressionism and surrealism became an epic movement that changed New York.
